I look for the beauty in life, and try to echo that in my photography. The other day, I commented on another Dallas-area photographer’s pictures of a senior girl. My comment was:
“These are so beautiful!”
Then I paused and thought—
Should I have said, “She is so beautiful” instead?
And that’s when it hit me.
As a photographer—and I think many others would agree—I see beauty in people all the time. It’s one of the biggest reasons I do what I do. I want to show people how beautiful they are through the way I photograph them.
Confidence is beautiful.
So is laughter.
So is quiet determination, a mother’s love, or a dad who clearly adores his kids.
So when I said, “These are so beautiful,” what I really meant was:
This photographer captured something real, meaningful, and beautiful about this girl—and I saw it in the images.
You know that moment when you open your phone’s camera and it’s accidentally facing you?
Most likely, you’re holding it at a weird angle, the lighting is awful, and let’s just say… it’s not your most flattering look. Even the most beautiful person can look awkward in bad lighting with the wrong angles.
When someone hires me to photograph their family, their newborn, their high school senior—I want them to feel seen. I want to show them the beauty that already exists in their life:
I used to think it was shallow to focus on outer beauty. And yes—if that’s all we focus on, it absolutely is.
But we are made of both what’s on the inside and what’s on the outside. It’s not either/or. It’s a full picture—like a circle.
When I take a beautiful photo of someone, they get to see what I see.
When they see it, their confidence grows.
And when confidence grows, it changes how they move through the world.
That is beautiful.
Some of my senior girls have told me that they usually don’t like pictures of themselves—but the ones I took?
They love those the most.
To say I’m honored is an understatement. Truly, it means the world to me.
So let me leave you with this:
You—yes, YOU reading this—you are beautiful.
Ok, now here comes my shameless plug – ahem… I know it is currently July, BUT my fall calendar is booking NOW and that does include senior pictures. In fact, you don’t even have to wait til fall.
