Are You Afraid Your Authentic Family Photos Will Look Like a Hot Mess?

Do you want authentic family photos, but you’re afraid they’ll look like an “authentic hot mess”? Well, mama, let’s be honest: your family isn’t that different from everyone else’s. We’re all just hanging on by a hope and a prayer sometimes! 😄

My own four kids are older now, ranging from almost 23 to 16. I can’t physically go back in time, but I can look at photos and remember what those early days felt like. And I don’t want to remember stiff smiles and forced “CHEEEESE!”

I want the real moments. The funny ones. The messy ones. The ones that make us laugh when we tell the stories years later.

That’s what I want for you, too. That’s why I take the kind of authentic family photos that I do.

Sure, social media has its benefits—I use it to grow my business, too. BUT we’ve all had that moment of seeing someone’s “perfect” family photo: matching pajamas, coordinated outfits, a smiling toddler and a dog looking at the camera… and thinking, “My family could never look like that.”

Spoiler alert: nobody’s family looks like that all the time.

Why Choose Authentic Family Photos Instead of Posed Portraits?

What Authentic Family Sessions Really Look Like

I’ve photographed hundreds of families over the last 20+ years. And here’s the truth: authentic family photo sessions don’t look “perfect”—and that’s what makes them so valuable.

What Parents Often Worry About:

These are the things that you might feel anxious about (but I don’t!):

  • Parents feeling frustrated
  • Kids crying
  • Siblings arguing
  • Kids making silly faces
  • Constantly asking to see the camera screen
  • Throwing rocks
  • Climbing on things

These are actually the moments that make for great authentic family photography:

  • Kids being themselves
  • Laughing families
  • Big sticks and muddy feet
  • Water splashes and leaf piles
  • Shy kids, energetic kids, even grumpy kids
  • Genuine connection, not just posed perfection

There’s No Such Thing as a Perfect Family

If you’re nervous that your photos might be “too real,” I want you to let that fear go. I’m not judging you. I’m here to help you feel confident, relaxed, and seen.

What to Expect at an Authentic Family Photo Session

Here’s how I help families feel comfortable during our session:

  • We play lots of games.
  • I give plenty of direction—but it’s relaxed and easy to follow.
  • I let kids be themselves. If they make a silly face or say something unexpected, I laugh along with them.
  • I bring patience and flexibility to every session.

Because when you’re photographing young kids… you get young kids. And that’s the beauty of it.

Connection is the goal

Authentic family photos are about connection, not perfection. They’re about remembering how it felt, not just how it looked. Let’s capture the joy, the chaos, the hugs, the giggles—the real you.
