Is Spring or Fall better for family pictures?

Spring vs Fall

It’s no secret that the busiest seasons in North Texas for family pictures are the Spring and Fall. My Fall calendar opens for booking August 1st. Sessions for these usually begin about early-mid September and run all the way through early December. What’s crazy is that at the beginning of the season, I prep clients that it could easily be 85 degrees that day. By the end of the Fall season, we are cold and prepping for what to wear when it is cold and windy. Being flexible is a must!

But what about Spring family pictures?

The next busiest season is the Spring for family picture sessions. Suddenly all of nature wakes up and comes back to life in mid March. This year, in 2024 we are getting a jump start on it all. The wildflowers and vibrant greens make everything pop! There are always a few last minute senior sessions that happen in March and April too. Spring is also a great time to book a milestone session or even a just-because it’s-Spring session.

So what are the pros and cons of each season for family pictures?

I think the biggest thing to ask yourself is: What will these pictures be used for? Also, think about your flexibility in schedule. Does your child play in a Fall sport but not a Spring sport? Do yourself a favor and book the session when your family is not SO busy. Although fall is by far the busiest time, I want to give you a few reasons to consider the Spring. Hint – Spring is actually my favorite!

  1. The weather is a little more even from March to May. Yes, we may get some rainy days here and there, but overall, you aren’t going to have quite as many temperature dips.
  2. My schedule tends to be much more flexible in Spring, which allows for me to accomodate your family.
  3. You get a head start on having pictures to use for a Christmas card, which takes one more thing off your to-do list. Unless your child is under 2, the chances are they won’t look drastically different by the fall for that Christmas card picture.
  4. Everything is so freshly green and wildflowers are popping up.
  5. If you are home during Spring Break, you can utilize that time to get a family session in.
  6. The sunset times are a little earlier for little ones that go to bed earlier.
  7. If you had family pictures in the fall, Spring is a great time to book a half session that could be “just the kids” if it is too hard to get all the schedules coordinated.
